Welcome to the North West School of Psychiatry

The North West School of Psychiatry oversees postgraduate training in psychiatry across Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester. We offer core psychiatry training, as well as higher training in six psychiatry specialties.

The School works closely with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, local Universities and NHS trusts to produce the highest quality of postgraduate training in psychiatry and to create opportunities to make its future generations of psychiatrists the best in the country.

Welcome from the Head of School

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the School of Psychiatry at Health Education North West (HENW). The School aims to equip future generations with the knowledge and skills to succeed in their chosen specialty in psychiatry, by providing the highest standards in education across our training schemes. We recognise the NHS is changing rapidly and the importance of preparing our doctors to provide clinical leadership in developing services. We pride ourselves in working collaboratively with the local Mental Health Trusts and Acute Trusts to deliver training, but also to ensure a positive work environment where doctors feel supported and enjoy their work. These principles align with our school values of: Future Generations, Excellence, Integrity and Inclusiveness.

Many of our educators, including myself, trained in this region and we value the longstanding friendships we made during our training period. There is a diversity of opportunities in both training location and experience across the HENW footprint, but a common theme is the warmth of the community. There are leading researchers in mental health based in the Northwest and many examples of service innovation. There are fantastic opportunities for trainees to engage in the range of activity in research and innovation.

The region was recently acclaimed in the Times Best places to live 2018, as ‘more than anywhere else in Britain, the buzz is in the Northwest’

“Manchester is booming. Liverpool is snapping at its heels and is Lancashire the new Cheshire?”

– The Sunday Times ‘Best Places to Live 2018’

Our school strategy 2018-2022 captures the collective ambition of our key educators, trainees and educational administrators. It sets out our aspirations for the next 4 years, with a focus on the following areas:

  1. Improving recruitment and retention of psychiatry doctors
  2. Enhancing the wellbeing of our trainee doctors in their working lives
  3. Developing the School profile

We are looking for trainees to be involved in the developmental work and we will update our progress on the website.
